Chipping Sodbury Town FC looking for an 'exciting season'
CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB manager has said he is expecting a 'big season' ahead for his team.
Speaking following his side's loss to rivals Yate Town FC on Wednesday, Neil admitted there were positives to take despite the 1-3 defeat.
"Getting that match sharpness back was the key thing from that night, trying to find patterns of play that we are working towards," he said.
"Match fitness is obviously the key thing. We were looking to try and gel the squad. When I looked at it (pre-season) I wanted to make sure that I got the team in good shape before the season.
"We had a couple of new faces which performed well last night, so we are probably going to be looking to add some to the team for this year."
Neil's side held their own against Yate Town right up until the 88th minute, when Town captain Nick Peare scored two brilliant free-kicks to give the visitors the win.
Ross Langworthy had put Yate ahead in the first half, finishing with a fine header into the bottom corner. However George Box had levelled things for Sodbury with a fine finish after the ball rebounded to him in the box.
Peare had the last word though beating Sodbury's keeper Kieren Provis, who had made a superb save onto the crossbar earlier in the half, with two fantastically taken free-kicks.
"We played really well, we were undone by two brilliant set-plays so when you look at it that way then we have to take the positives from the game," Neil continued.
"We had our chances and on a different day could have ended up with a win. I wish them luck for the upcoming season, I'm sure they will be successful."
Neil took over the side last season after previous manager Gary Powell left for Paulton Rovers in June, he is now hoping to continue to build an 'exciting, young' team.
"I wanted to build a youthful, enthusiastic squad that want to develop. We don't have the budget that other teams around us have, so we have to find a different angle and way of doing things." He said.
"We have now got a squad which is looking really promising and are really committed. In return we really look at trying to push players up the leagues and to the next levels.
"We have had players that have been approached by other clubs, so the fact that we have been able to keep those players here is testament to everyone at the club."
Rockleaze Rangers are the visitors in Sodbury's final game of pre-season on Saturday, July 28, with Neil hoping his side can use that to drive them to success in the league that starts the following weekend."It is going to be nice to end the pre-season at home, they are going to be a strong well-drilled side. So it is one that we are looking forward to playing."

“Firstly, yesterday was always going to be tricky for us as we had 8 players out either suspended (due to tough, very tough competitive games against Reading City in the last round), injured or on holiday.
For me there needs to be a question asked of the FA as to why they are scheduling FA Cup games on a Bank Holiday weekend in the early rounds of the competition. The teams are non-league and are made up of players for whom football is more of a hobby or passion than a livelihood, so some have to use that weekend as a time to go on holiday with their families, whilst they are on a break from work. The importance of these FA Cup games in the early rounds to smaller non-league teams is massive financially and it seems as though these factors are not considered by the FA at times… So yesterday from our point of view was always going to be about the result and less about the performance, as proved to be the case. The day started early for us, meeting at our club at 8.50am to set off at 9am. From my perspective I wanted to get the lads together nice and early, getting up to Banbury in plenty of time, so we could properly set ourselves up for the game. We set off and traffic was not an issue which was great, considering it was a Bank Holiday weekend; we took the M4 route and stopped at Membury Services on the way to break the journey up. On the night before I had done some research and found a well recommended Cafe, Regs Cafe, on the outskirts of Banbury only 15 mins from the ground, so we stopped there and had a team lunch. I did ban the lads from having a full fry-up and pushed them down a more suitable option with the game ahead in mind. I had also researched a local park in Banbury, People’s Park, which I took the lads to after the Cafe, just to have a walk and stretch their legs and clear their minds before we went on to the ground. A few players had never done anything like that before, so there were a few jovial comments plus banter which was perfect and helped to again relax the group. We arrived at the ground just after 1pm, so as normal my coaching team and I sent the lads out onto the pitch while we set up the changing room with the kit, etc. Our Physio ‘Ken’ was also very busy at this stage as we had a number of players carrying knocks and following my pre-match team-talk out on the pitch and the start of the warm up we lost our winger, Jake Thomas through injury from the starting line up. Jake also had to pull out of the replay with Reading after picking up his injury in the warm-up but he was desperate to be back and playing for this game, so it was not the best start for us. I normally like to scout the teams we are playing against, especially when they are not in our league or local to us, which was the case with Easington, but unfortunately with the quick turn around from the last round this was not possible, so I only had information from various online outlets to go on. My team talk before sending the lads out therefore was very much about ourselves rather than Easington. We also began the game with three players that had not started a match for us this season, so it was important that they fully understood what was needed of them. With regards to the game itself, we started very poorly and let Easington get on the front foot; our passing and retention of the ball in the first-half was extremely poor which only served to encourage the Clan. Whilst we came into the game as favourites based on our league position, with so many players out and confidence taking a knock from the last league game, a 6-0 defeat to Brislington, I was in no doubt that this was going to be a very close and tough game. Easington had started well in their league and based on the games played so far, they seemed to be at full strength squad-wise. As underdogs you look to get every edge and it was clear that Easington were going to appeal for every single thing and look to unsettle us at any available opportunity. Clearly the major talking point from the first-half was the allowed then disallowed goal just before half-time. From our perspective it was a perfectly fine goal and the assistant had given it, as had the referee, to a point where our lads had celebrated and had started to walk back to the half-way line. However, all of a sudden the assistant was surrounded by Easington's players and with a strong home vocal crowd behind him, all of a sudden it was decided it was offside. As we left the field at half-time I questioned the referee, to be told that the assistant had realised, after a considerable length of time, that he had made a mistake. In my honest opinion, I felt the officials had a very ‘challenging’ afternoon and from an away team’s perspective, they seemed to be affected by the environment. I do understand that it’s not easy for officials at times and without them games would not go ahead, so I respect the job they have to do. However, there is also a lot of pressure on clubs with so much at stake and any believed injustice is very hard to accept. At half-time I said to the lads that the performance was not acceptable and despite the disallowed goal we did not deserve to be in front anyway. In my opinion we needed to take a leaf out of our opposition’s book and start playing a bit more directly and ask questions of their back 3 by getting them turning. We also discussed dealing with that the other way, as that seemed to be the Clan’s main threat and we also discussed our centre-halves getting involved in tussling matches with their striker too much, which had happened in the first-half. |
So the second-half got underway and within minutes, the exact thing we had discussed happened: a long ball over the top and their striker ran through and lobbed our ‘keeper, so it was massively disappointing having just spoken about that being the threat. Nevertheless, this season we have not gone in front in a match as of yet and in the majority of games, going behind has actually kicked us into action.
We started to play a bit better and got some joy by playing some direct balls ourselves but time was ticking away, so on 70 minutes I decided to make a substitution and change the formation, for as even though we were better than the hosts we were not causing as many problems for them as I would have liked. So I bought on Liam Pullen, who would have started if he had been fully fit but he was carrying a groin injury, yet with 20 minutes to go and 1 - 0 down it was a risk worth taking as Liam has the ability to get on the ball and create things in the attacking third. I took off our left-back and went with three at the back and played Liam in behind the front two and that made an impact straight away, as we then started to dominate the midfield and naturally being 1 - 0 up, Easington started to be more defensive. We started to create more opportunities but time was ticking away, so I also sent our right-midfielder Joe White (who is actually a striker but due to lack of numbers, he did me a job at right midfield yesterday) up front with 5 minutes to go, making the formation a 3-3-1-3. In the 90th minute it paid off with a great cross from Jamie Samuel for our centre-midfielder and skipper Steven Fitzpatrick (also our M.O.M.) to ghost in at the back post and nod home. After the goal I pulled Joe back to right midfield but kept everything else the same and with the amount of time that needed to be added on there were always going to be chances left for both teams to snatch it. From our perspective, thankfully we did. In the 93rd min Liam, who had clearly made a difference, slid a great ball through to Justin who escaped his marker and tucked it away in the bottom corner which obviously we were delighted with and whilst I always have total respect for our opposition, it’s very hard not to celebrate a last minute winner in the FA Cup especially having been on the brink of defeat only 4 minutes before. It was a shame that there were two red cards late on; Justin got kicked whilst he was on the floor which was probably because of the turnaround in the game and with emotions running high, but at the end of the game Justin should have been experienced enough to walk away, rather than continue to question the officials, so he got a second yellow after full-time. With all the above considered, Easington will feel hard done by with the two late goals and as we and pretty much every club will know, football can be a cruel game at times. From my perspective, we underperformed massively yesterday, even taking into consideration the players we had missing, but ultimately it’s all about the result, especially when there is so much financial reward on the game. Winning yesterday will make a massive difference to a club like ours. As you can imagine, following a stop at the local supermarket and a visit to the beers, wines and spirits isle, the minibus was very lively on the long journey back, with karaoke and a general sing-song helping to pass the time. Hopefully we can get a good draw in the next round on Wednesday and enjoy that day, come what may but we need to ensure we get going in the league now when we host Bridgwater next Saturday and hopefully the feel good factor from today can help us do that…” Neil Simons. Manager, Chipping Sodbury Town. |

The Sods are rooted to the bottom of the Toolstation Western League after four defeats from their opening four league games.
The run has included losses at the hands of Willand Rovers, Bridport and a 6-0 humbling by Brislington. However the match on Saturday, marked their biggest defeat as they were thrashed by the league leaders. Sodbury were missing some key first team players, but were boosted by the return of midfield playmaker Liam Pullen to the first team side following a groin injury. In goal Kieren Provis also made his competitive debut for the team, producing a fine penalty save, but could do little about the final result. Bridgwater started the game strongest and were ahead within minutes as Jake Brown scored with a fine header from a free kick that was whipped in by Harry Horton. Brown was heavily involved the opening exchanges of the match, going on to win a penalty in the 17th minute after being tripped by a Sodbury player whilst running through on goal. Jack Taylor stepped up for the away side, however his fine penalty which was aimed right into the bottom right corner of the net was expertly tipped wide by the debutant Provis. Fans were hoping that the save would spur Sodbury into action, however they were being restricted to efforts from range and counter attacks as Bridgwater dominated. The home side were made to pay for some more lacklustre defending as Taylor made amends for his penalty miss by heading in a fine cross from the right. |
Tom Ellis then had a goal disallowed for offside for Bridgwater as they continued to push forward. It wasn’t long before he did have his goal though.
Horton played in another dangerous free-kick, with Ellis getting free of his marker and powering past Provis to make it 3-0 with only half an hour played. Horton added another just before half time to make it 4-0 to the visitors. The second half started and Sodbury were again second best. Taylor and Horton then combined well to fashion a chance for Sam Towler, he finished into the roof of the net to make it five. Kurt Robinson then scored with a cross-shot that found its way into the far corner. Ryan Burrows then converted after running and finishing past Provis, again leaving the Sodbury keeper no chance. Burrows could have scored another as he rounded the Sodbury keeper, however Provis did just enough. Ian Bellinger rounded off the scoring for Bridgwater who never looked like throwing the game away after going ahead. Sodbury almost netted a consolation with Luke Burman letting fly towards the top corner. However, Jake Viney made a fantastic save to deny the Chipping Sodbury substitute. Manager Neil Simons admitted after the game that he took responsibility for the defeat, but Sodbury now search for a new manager after he stepped down ahead of their FA Cup match next weekend against Bristol Manor Farm from the league above them. It soon became apparent that Bristol Manor Farm, from Division One south of the Southern League, would be a difficult team to break down.
As the half progressed Sodbury were reduced to defending in numbers and they struggled to build any meaningful attack with their only outlet the long ball to a solitary forward. Bristol enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and on 17 minutes were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. The three man wall didn’t move as a fierce shot rattled the top of the cross bar and out for a goal kick. On 22 minutes the visitors took the lead. Good work down the Sodbury left allowed Owen Howe to find plenty of room inside the area and as the defence stood off he struck a ferocious shot which left Dando stranded. The Bristol pressure continued unabated and just eleven minutes later they took a 2-0 lead. Their second goal followed a patient build up starting deep in their own half. A through ball split the midfield and a clever flick-on found Howe unmarked and he finished with a first time shot from inside the penalty area. Dando kept the home side in contention with a string of fine saves but it was clear as the half closed that their opponents had the quality all over the pitch to pose too big a challenge. |
The second half began in much the same vein as the first with Manor Farm dominating possession and Sodbury struggling to clear their lines. With just four minutes gone the visitors were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box following a foul.
In the ensuing melee the Sodbury fullback was struck to the ground and left with a cut just above his eye. The referee had not seen the incident but consulted his assistant who confirmed that the two-goal hero from the first half should receive his marching orders. The resultant free kick beat the three man wall and Dando parried the low shot, pushing it to safety. The game became disjointed and Bristol lost their rhythm as Sodbury tried to take advantage of the extra man. Striker Liam Pullen was introduced replacing Jamie Samuel in an effort to bolster the attack and the Sods enjoyed a greater share of the possession for the first time in the match. The Sods forced a number of corners over the following 20 minutes but were unable to break down a stubborn defence. They made a number of half chances but were unable to capitalise on their superior numbers and it was Bristol who came closest to adding to the score. Report Courtesy Yate & Sodbury Voice. |
FA VASE 2nd QUALIFYING ROUND.
15th September 2018 Attendance - 53 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 S.Fitzpatrick ABBEY RANGERS 3 Manager less Chipping Sodbury Town FC’s poor start to the season continued at the Ridings with a performance that did little to impress the applicants for the vacant position who were watching.
Facing Combined Counties Premier Division side Abbey Rangers the Sods were hoping to consign their recent FA Cup defeat to ancient history however their visitors had different ideas and enjoyed a reasonably comfortable away win in the Buildbase FA Vase second round qualifying tie. It started brightly enough for Sodbury who were ahead after just 16 minutes following an even opening period in which both sides tested each other’s defence without any real threat on goal. The goal came when Sodbury’s first corner was sent long to the back post. The visitors failed to clear and Steve Fitzpatrick hammered home a low shot from inside the penalty area. Just four minutes later Sodbury nearly added to their lead when a Rangers defender misjudged a header back to his keeper but the ball went harmlessly out for a corner. The home side were on top for the first quarter of the game but could not sustain their momentum and it was Rangers that began to grow into the game and apply pressure. On 27 minutes the visitors were level when Alex Hendrie finished off a patient build up with a close range header. The Rangers winger outpaced Sodbury’s Tom Fry and his cross to the far post was headed back across the area for Hendrie to give the home keeper no chance. Sam Burgess deputising for Jack Dando in the Sods goal had a moment to forget on 77 minutes when he gifted Rangers their second following a mix up. He misjudged a through ball played over the top and found himself in no mans land. Bradley Sweeney chipped Burgess from just outside the area to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Just four minutes later the tie was sewn up when Rangers added a third. A superb low cross was met by Danny Hartlebury with a powerful header from close range. Report Courtesy Yate & Sodbury Voice. |

29th SEPTEMBER 2018 Attendance - 106 BUCKLAND ATHLETIC 0 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 J.Kenway Buckland slipped to their 2nd home defeat in 3 games after failing to turn their dominate possession into clear cut chances against a resolute and determined Chipping Sodbury side that was seeking its first league win of the season.
Interim Manager, Adam Castle made 3 enforced changes from last week’s win away to Cribbs FC, on-loan Truro City defender Austen Booth replaced the injured Mike Booth, the returning Lloyd Gardner came in for the unvailable Nick Rudge and back-up goalkeeper Marko Radovanovic came in for the also unavailable Kenny Griffiths. Replacement keeper Radovanovic was heavily invloved in the only goal of the game on 25 minutes, when a corner wasn’t dealt with and the ball fell to a James Kenway to score easily into an empty net. On another day Buckland may have got a result from this performance but it wasn’t to be, congratulations to CST on their win and best of luck for the rest of the season. |
