It was Bath City that came out and dominated the opening exchanges, and they went in front before Sodbury had barely touched the ball.
Murphy, whose set-pieces were a threat throughout, sent in a low, sweeping corner that found a way through for Batten, who turned home from eight yards. That pattern of play continued as Monthe flicked a Murphy cross just wide of the post and Andy Watkins finished off a passing move, only to have his goal chalked off by the linesman's flag. Another strong spell of tidy Bath football allowed Dan Bowman to swing a left-footed cross deep for Watkins, whose shot was patted down comfortably by the Sodbury keeper, But Sodbury found a leveller when a corner was flicked to the back post. The waiting James Mackie's stooping header cracked back off the crossbar and fell for Sims to convert following up. City's class often showed compared to their Western League hosts. At one point Frankie Artus turned a delightful pass down the left-hand channel for Watkins to run onto and cross narrowly ahead of a hungry Stuart Fleetwood. Then, despite calls from Owers to get the right-footed George Rigg on a free-kick from the left, Billy Murphy stepped up and swung over a ball that Batten nodded over the top. Plucky Sodbury almost found themselves in behind when Sims attempted an intricate through ball for Mackie that Phillips was out sharply to slide in and grab. More decent passing failed to find a final ball, with George Rigg scything a 25-yard drive narrowly over. A hustling Fleetwood outmuscled Mike Beacham, but was just about seen off by Dale Emery, before he, Dan Ball and Rigg had a triplet of successive shots kept out by the keeper and his scrambling defence. Sodbury almost went ahead when a rare forward foray from the hosts earned a corner, from which Emery was left with acres of space on the penalty spot but headed over. |
But the Romans should have been back in front by the break as they opened up a prime opportunity that went to waste.
Good work from Fleetwood set McCootie away in the box to check inside his man and blaze way past the angle of post and bar from close in. There was one more chance before the break when McCootie was unable to get a Bowman cross out from under his feet and instead cut back for Watkins, who connected poorly with a jab that bobbled into the keeper's clutches. Sodbury almost shocked City on the return to the pitch when Joe White flicked a header on for substitute Chris Foyle to drive into Phillips' arms. The visitors made a series of changes themselves, including a completely reveamped frontline that featured new trialist Jackson, who soon found space for a cut-back that evaded any of the red Bath shirts up top. Another of those subs, Josh Hutchinson, weaved his way forward on the left and sent in a cross that was fired goalwards by both Shaquille Hunter and Eilan Gordon, each blocked out. Home keeper Hale also punched away a Murphy cross under the pressure – the loose ball fired into a defender by Batten. Gordon returned the earlier favour by dinking a delicate centre from the left, only for the keeper to somehow push out a close-range Hutchinson header with his fingertips, before saving another daisy-cutting effort from the substitute minutes later. Jackson had his first chance when he latched onto a cheeky dinked free-kick from Murphy, with Hale tipping his over-the-shoulder volley into the side netting. He soon had another opportunity blocked on the line at point-black range after Hunter squeezed his way down the byline and cut-back. The luckless Romans front four continued to run the hard yards throughout the closing stages, but a string of blocks from the Sodbury defenders kept their goal unbreached for a second time. |

23rd JULY 2016 Attendance - unknown. RADSTOCK TOWN 3 R.Childs J.Witcombe S.Millard CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 3 |
Radstock started this match with a number of changes. Young goalkeeper Mitch Wooley made his debut in goal and Ryan Child's made a welcome return to the miners midfield. Radstock commenced the game in much the same manner as the midweek fixture. Plenty of possession produced an early corner for the miners, From the corner Josh Howe was fouled and Ryan Child's duly dispatched the penalty to get his first goal of the season. However Chipping Sodbury continued to probe for an equaliser and a cross from the Radstock Town right was met at the far post five minutes later which was ticked away to bring the scores level. Radstock continued to cause the Chipping Sodbury defence plenty of problems with Simon Millard who again looked Sharpe and worked tirelessly to carve open opportunities almost scored just before half time but the Chipping Sodbury keeper blocked well.
|
The second half saw opportunities falling to both teams however Chpping Sodbury took the lead through their own corner which was headed in convincingly at the Rastock far post. A defensive mix up between miners Brad Partner and Josh Howe gifted Chipping Sodbury a third goal. The mix up by the miners defensive duo was not representative of their performances as both along with Sean Keets were defensively excellent. With a few tired legs from the previous mid week match, manager Shane Smith made changes which saw Tony Pow, Pele Sobers, and Nathan Cridge enter the match. Tony Pow made an instant impact with some excellent defending, whist Nathan Cridge and Pele Sobers also made effective contributions. Radstock appeared to raise their game and from the moment that Jack Witcome fired in his 2nd pre-season goal, it looked as though Radstock would get back into the match. This proved to be the case when Simon Millard made no mistake to score his 1st goal of the season from a good pass from Paul Gittins who had entered the match in the middle of the first half. Radstock continued to press and this almost paid off right at the end of the match when Simon Millard delivered a good cross in from the right which found Tom Pow, who's header narrowly went wide of the post.

Brimscombe had a good first half with Sodbury under the cosh for most of the time and Brimscombe deservedly took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute when captain Chris Greenough found the net with a fine header from a clever Josh Jones free-kick.
|
Chipping Sodbury however took command of the second period with two clever goals from George Box that gave keeper Steve Sparrow no chance.

27th AUGUST 2016 Attendance - 124 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 3 D.Sims. A.Missiato. J.Guest. SHERBOURNE TOWN 2 E.Mann x2. Honours were even after 15 minutes but Sherborne were to gift their opponents a two goal lead in the next 10 minutes, the opener came after a innocuous cross from the right was palmed into his own goal by keeper Simon Bleazard. Then minute’s later possession was lost on the halfway line which left the defence exposed for the rampant Sodbury attackers to pounce to score. Sherborne were given a lifeline back into the game when the referee awarded a penalty for hand ball. Elliott Mann stood firm and slotted the ball into the corner of the net. With renewed confidence Sherborne settled down although the hosts always looked dangerous on the break. Referee’s very rarely get praise for the job they do, but Mr Dan Flynn played one of the best advantages we’ve seen for a while a Sherborne midfielder was fouled midway inside the Sodbury half when it would have been easy to blow his whistle, Dan hesitated and allowed play to continue enabling Elliott to notch up his second of the game, the smile on the referees face was for all to see! The second half was reasonably even but it was evident Sodbury were making the clearer chances, midway through the half a cross from the right was met at chest height by a Chipping Sodbury striker who acrobatically fired into the goal. Sherborne “huffed and puffed” but could not salvage a point, which leaves them still looking for their first points of the season. |

Both teams got off to a cagey start and the first real chance didn’t come till nearly 20 minutes had been played; Harry Baker profiting from a defensive error but putting his shot marginally wide of the goal. Chipping Sodbury’s first chance came some 5 minutes later but their player snatched his shot and put the ball across the face of goal and wide of the back post.
The Gills were looking the better team but the trend of just missing the goal continued when, just before the half hour mark, Aiden Chainey put a shot just wide of the goal and 7 minutes later Elliot Bevis did the same. The Gills’ finally made the pressure pay with 5 minutes of the half remaining when a superbly weighted long ball by Nick Thomson found Harry Baker who had raced clear of the defence. Harry cheekily lobbed the advancing keeper, Reed, and this time the ball bounced on the goal line before finding the back of the net. So, despite looking comfortable, the Gills took a slender 0 - 1 lead into the break. The lead was doubled just 5 minutes into the second half when the Gills were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area after a foul on Aiden Chainey. Haydn Hodges took the kick and put his shot into the top right corner out of reach of keeper Reed to make it 0 - 2. |

Justin Bishop - League Appearances 39 Just before the hour Elliot Bevis went close to giving the Gills a third goal but Reed made a great fingertip save to deny him. For the last 20 minutes Sodbury came back into the game with a vengeance as the Gills appeared to tire. Jamie Beale made a great save by tipping a fierce shot onto the bar to keep the Gills’ two goal lead but with 7 minutes left to play Sodbury pulled a goal back. Nick Hewlett lost a long ball in the sun and this allowed Justin Bishop through on goal who placed his shot under Jamie Beale to make it 1 - 2. The goal spurred Sodbury on, but the Gills held firm till the final whistle to earn a valuable three points on the road. |

4th OCTOBER 2016 Attendance - 96 SHEPTON MALLET 1 L.Matthews CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 2 A.Criddle. J.White. |
Shepton gave a strangely subdued performance when they hosted Chipping Sodbury for the first time, eventually losing to a late penalty.
After Justin Bishop hit a 20 yard shot just too high for Sodbury, Shepton replied with a Ben Lacey effort from Tyson Pollard's pass that visiting keeper Ben Reed saved well, before the home side went ahead on 17 minutes. Pollard hit a low free kick into the opposing six yard box and after a scramble, Shepton's Lewis Matthews knocked the ball over the line from close in. The lead only lasted two minutes though, as Sodbury scored a controversial leveller following a corner kick that Shepton keeper Jamie Rothwell punched away from under his crossbar despite being fouled as he did so. Later confirming that he was unsighted, the referee allowed play to go on, and Rothwell's clearance was knocked back in from 20 yards by Sodbury's Andy Criddle, the ball taking a deflection and finding the back of the net, as Rothwell was again being obstructed. Despite protestations from the home side the goal was given, and from then to the break there was little more goalmouth action with Shepton mostly playing in second gear, and the visitors looking comfortable in possession. Harley Warren forced a save from Rothwell just after the half hour mark, and Ash Willmott did likewise from Reed soon after, but that was about it until early after the restart when Pollard then tried his luck from long range with a lob that beat Reed but also cleared the bar by some yards. The same player then teed up George Zaharia, who cut inside his marker before hitting a shot straight at Reed who saved comfortably. Ten minutes into the half, Reed tipped a header from Shepton's Joe Morgan over his own bar after Willmott and Pollard had combined to set up the chance, and just past the hour mark Bishop went close with Sodbury's 1st decent chance of the second period with a shot on the turn that went a couple of yards wide of a post. From the restart Shepton forced another corner, and when Pollard's cross was cleared back to him, he cut inside his marker before floating a pin point cross into the middle for Morgan to rise and head past Reed only to see the ball agonisingly come back off a post before being cleared by the relieved visitors. |

Aston Newman - League Appearances 23 Midway through the half, it was the home side's turn to be relieved as they had Rothwell to thank for saving with his legs after Dave Sims burst through for his side before shooting for goal. Five minutes later, the next half chance also fell to the visitors after Bishop got the better of Ross McErlain for once and moved towards goal, only to be denied by Rothwell who raced to the edge of his 18 yard area to dive at Bishop's feet and snatch the ball. With ten minutes to go, the winning goal came after Sims was allowed to waltz through at least three opponents before McErlain caught his trailing leg to concede a penalty that White hammered past Rothwell with little fuss. From then to the end, Willmott tried his luck from longe range more than once, when other options might have been more productive, as Reed saved each shot easily, for his side to take the points. Chipping Sodbury just about deserved to win, though Shepton's cause was not helped by very poor officiating on the night with their frustrations resulting in three bookings, two of them for dissent, ironical as Shepton have just won the Premier Division Fair Play award for September, and there was not a bad tackle by either side all night. |

Clevedon Town visited The Ridings for their first competitive game against Chipping Sodbury since the 1951/1952 season and returned with the 3 points following a second successive 4-3 win to extend their unbeaten run to 6 matches.
On 6 minutes Clevedon were awarded a free-kick wide on the right which Jake Llewellyn swung in to the 6-yard box and with the ball heading towards the far corner of the net Chipping Sodbury keeper Ben Reed had to get down quickly and turn the ball around the post. From the resultant corner the ball was cleared and the home team went straight down the other end and took the lead. The ball was played forward and with Jake Llewellyn looking to clear he was knocked off the ball by Dave Sims and with Clevedon’s appeals for a free-kick ignored by the referee the striker calmly picked his spot to give Ben Murray no chance and make the score 1-0. Clevedon went looking for the equaliser and in the 16th minute won a free-kick wide on the right. Jake Llewellyn swung the ball to the far post where Kaine Gazzard couldn’t get enough on his header to direct the ball on target and it flew over the bar. Clevedon did find an equaliser on 21 minutes. An excellent cross into the box from the right by Archie Ferris was headed home by skipper Kevin Camargo whose determination to win the ball saw him power the ball into the net when the defender appeared favourite to clear and make the score 1-1. Chipping Sodbury went back into the lead in the 29th minute. A long ball forward found Dave Sims who created the space to fire the ball home and make the score 2-1. On 37 minutes a free-kick on the right saw Jake Llewellyn’s shot flash just passed the post. James Fisher was causing problems with his pace down the right and on 39 minutes his cross to the near post was cleared while 2 minutes later another run and cross saw the ball deflected for a corner which came to nothing. In the 42nd minute a Ryan Gissing header found Isaac Reid on the left and he cut inside before laying the ball into the path of Toby Yeates whose shot was saved. Half Time: Chipping Sodbury Town 2 Clevedon Town 1 Clevedon were quickly into their stride at the start of the second half and on 47 minutes a run down the right by Toby Yeates saw him cut inside and unleash a shot that was pushed wide by Ben Reed. In the 54th minute Toby Yeates played the ball through for Isaac Reid to chase but the ball was cleared for a throw-in which Clevedon took quickly with the ball played to Kevin Camargo whose shot was saved by Ben Reed. More quick thinking saw Clevedon equalise in the 56th minute. Clevedon won a free-kick wide on the right and with the Chipping Sodbury defenders trying to get back into position Archie Ferris played the ball short to James Fisher who beat Harley Warren before crossing to the far post where Toby Yeates smashed the ball home to make the score 2-2. On 65 minutes a cross from the right by Archie Ferris was headed clear to Toby Yeates on the edge of the box and his shot went over the bar. |

A ball into the Clevedon box should have been cleared but Dave Sims was quickest to react and smashed the loose ball at goal and although Ben Murray got a hand to it he couldn’t stop the ball going into the net for the striker’s hat-trick and to make the score 3-2. Clevedon equalised for the third time on 78 minutes with the best goal of the game. Jake Llewellyn played the ball forward to Daine O’Connor who out-jumped his marker to head the ball into the path of Isaac Reid who took the ball in his stride and hit it passed the onrushing Ben Reed’s right hand to make the score 3-3. Clevedon should have got their 4th in the 87th minute when a great cross by James Fisher found Daine O’Connor unmarked inside the 6-yard box but he couldn’t control his shot and the ball spun off his foot and wide. To their credit Clevedon weren’t happy to settle for a point and pushed forward looking for the winner and they got it in the 6th minute of stoppage time. Clevedon won a free-kick on the right and as it was about to be taken Clevedon manager Micky Bell noticed the space on the nearside of the penalty area and urged James Fisher to fill it in case the ball was knocked back from the far post. The free-kick was played to the far post where the ball was indeed knocked down straight to James Fisher who was just about to head the ball when Michael Beacham’s boot caught him in the face to give the referee no choice other than to point to the spot. After a delay for treatment to James Fisher Isaac Reid confidently dispatched the ball passed Ben Reed to make the score 3-4 and see the visitors take the lead for the first time in the entire match. Shortly after the referee brought the game to an end to see the Clevedon players celebrating a remarkable victory. Report and Photos Courtesy Tony Merrett.

10th JANUARY 2017 Attendance - 45 FAIRFORD TOWN 3 J.Milhench. J.Morse x2. CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 2 S.Jenkins. Drewett(Own Goal). |
Fairford Town had to fight back twice from behind against Chipping Sodbury to book their place in the last four of the Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy.
Sam Jenkins gave the visitors to Cinder Lane an early lead when he finished from close range on 20 minutes. Jason Milhench then levelled 10 minutes before the break with his fine effort from a tight angle. On the hour though Fairford fell behind once again as Dan Drewett bundled the ball over his own line. Fairford though hit straight back with Josh Morse scoring from the penalty spot just minutes later. Morse then clinched victory for Fairford with another penalty on 73 minutes. Jamie Zoldan was in fine form between the sticks for Fairford as he twice denied Sodbury an equalising goal while the visitors’ hope were dashed late on when Harley Warren received his marching orders. |

4th FEBRUARY 2017 Attendance - unknown CRIBB FC 0 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 G.Box |
Chipping Sodbury Town landed a top victory away at Cribbs FC on Saturday. Sodbury lined up with a team that was put together with a few last minute changes that were forced upon them but took to the field with a great attitude. Sodbury had the majority of the first half possession but couldn’t manage to find the goal their play deserved. Cribbs didn’t really threaten much during the half and keeper Tim Griffiths looked composed when called upon. The second half started with Cribbs forcing themselves on the game and they had a few chances to take the lead, one headed attempt hit the underside of the bar and bounced down on the line and was punched away by Griffiths. Then a bad goal kick resulted in the strikers of Cribbs combining well with one of them running directly into Sodbury’s area and squaring for Darren Edwards who managed to put the ball towards the bottom corner of the net but Griffiths was equal to it smothering the ball and saving it on the line. In a breakaway attack by Sodbury, the ball was passed to Jack Parker who took on a couple of players and slid a lovely pass to George Box who took his time whilst running into the area. Box calmly smashed the ball into the net beating the on-rushing ex-Sodbury keeper Ben Read at his near post. |

Jonathan Morgan - League Appearances 24 Shortly afterwards, a penalty was awarded to Cribbs but again, keeper Griffiths was equal to it and saved the ball right on the line. The keeper again had another full length save to make afterwards and this earned Sodbury a great three points away from home. It was a great team performance from all the players and especially considering that they had to have the help of several reserve players who stepped up to make up the shortfall of others on the day. And each one of them played a part in the Chipping Sodbury Town victory. |

Clevedon entertained Chipping Sodbury Town for their last game of the season and after a quiet opening 45 minutes the game came to life after the break when both teams had chances to win but ultimately had to settle for a point each from a 1-1 draw.
The first attempt on goal came from the visitors in the 8th minute when Ryan Bath’s speculative effort from 25 yards went well wide. On 13 minutes a cross from the left by Chipping Sodbury’s skipper Joe White saw Will Bennett punch clear with the ball falling to Sam Jenkins whose follow-up shot went wide. Chipping Sodbury created a good chance in the 16th minute when a corner from the right by Joshua Cann was met by an unmarked Joe Guest whose glancing header went wide. On 24 minutes a long cross-field ball from Owen Barry found Archie Ferris on the right and his attempted cross was blocked with the ball cleared up-field to Joe White who cut inside and saw his shot well saved by Will Bennett. 2 minutes later and the situation was repeated when Kevin Camargo played the ball down the right to Alex Camm whose attempted cross was blocked with the ball cleared forward to Ryan Bath who played the ball through for Joe White and his shot was blocked by the legs of Will Bennett. In the 28th minute Sam Holden won the ball in the middle and played it forward to Alex Camm who exchanged passes with Kevin Camargo before shooting just over. On 39 minutes the ball was played into the box where Ryan Bath’s turn and shot saw the ball saved by the feet of Will Bennett. In the 1st minute of stoppage time a long ball forward was headed on by Archie Ferris to Alex Camm who seeing Tom Sheppard off his line attempted to chip the keeper but could only find the side netting. |
Chipping Sodbury took the lead on 53 minutes. A free-kick from the left by Sam Taylor found Joshua Cann at the far post and he headed the ball back across goal where Joe White attempted to back-heel it into the net but missed and unfortunately for the home team the ball deflected off Callum Kingdon and into the net to make the score 0-1.
It didn’t take long for Clevedon to get back on level terms. In the 64th minute there appeared little danger as a long ball forward was headed on by Archie Ferris. Dan Dyke attempted to head the ball back to Tom Sheppard but Archie sprinted after the ball and managed to reach the ball first and toe-end it past the keeper and into the net to make the score 1-1. Chipping Sodbury then had a great chance to re-take the lead on 66 minutes when Dave Sims flashed the ball across the box where Ryan Bath somehow managed to miss an open goal. Clevedon had a great chance to go in front themselves in the 78th minute when a long ball forward saw Tom Sheppard come out to claim the ball however substitute Joe Hance managed to get there first and take the ball around the keeper but his attempted shot at the empty net hit the covering defender and went behind for a corner. On 79 minutes Clevedon created another chance when Archie Ferris won the ball in the box and passed to Joe Hance whose shot was well saved by Tom Sheppard. Clevedon had to be grateful to Man of the Match Will Bennett in the 87th minute when a corner from the left saw Ryan Bath’s header heading into the top corner of the net but the young Clevedon keeper leapt to his left to tip the ball over the bar. Although both teams kept pushing forward looking for the winner there were no further goals and the referee brought the game to an end with the score at 1-1. |
