19th SEPTEMBER 2009 Attendance - 45 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 HIGHRIDGE UNITED 3 Chipping Sodbury Town’s good form mid-week suffered a dip after a home defeat at the hands of Highridge United. Paul Harris put the home side ahead on 38 minutes with a strike from a cross after good pressure. Highridge stepped up a gear in the second half and were level with in a minute of the restart. A mistake from Chris Simsek allowed Shane Hobbs to tap in from close range. Ten minutes later Highridge took the lead through Dominic Graffagnino. In the 60th minute Highridge were awarded a penalty for which defender Shaun Overton was sent off and Craig Liddell netted from 12 yards. 3rd OCTOBER 2009 Attendance - 56 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 BERKELEY TOWN 1 Chipping Sodbury Town and Berkeley Town shared a point each in a 1-1 draw at the Ridings. In a very dour first 45 minutes where both sides never looked like breaking the deadlock it was eventually broken in the 55th minute by Berkeley’s Mike Reece whose 35 yard free kick deceived all to nestle in the back of the Sodbury net. The home side stepped up their game but could not fined the break through they needed until the 89th minute, Danny Coombes netting to gain them a point.

10th OCTOBER 2009 Attendance - 100 KINGS STANLEY 2 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 2 Kings Stanley dropped their first points of the season in a 2-2 draw at home to Chipping Sodbury Town. The first ten minutes belonged to Stanley as they rushed into a 2 – 0 lead. Aidan Mercer opened the scoring after 5 minutes when he slid the ball home after the ball had been headed across goal. Five minutes later Mark Uppington grabbed the second. Sodbury settled down and weathered this early set back and pulled a goal back in the 38th minute when a cross from the left was turned in by Paul Harris. At this stage Sodbury looked the better of the two sides but had to wait until the 80th minute when Danny Coombes drove a powerful shot into the top corner of the net from the edge of the box. Other chances were created and both teams hit the cross bar but Stanley regard this as a point gained.

An own goal in the 82nd minute gave Patchway Town the three points in a 2-1 victory at Chipping Sodbury Town. The conditions were difficult with a very strong wind blowing from end to end, but it was the home side who mastered the conditions really well by keeping the ball on the deck and passing it around. Shaun Halford had a great chance after just 2 minutes but blasted his shot over the bar. Patchway’s Tim O’Loughlin then pulled his shot from the edge of the box wide of the target. Sodbury striker Danny Coombes had two good chances to open the scoring but failed to beat the visitor’s keeper James Kaminski. Patchway’s Bradley Harris was always a threat to the home side when he broke clear down the left and Kerley had to push the ball over from a Matt Webb shot. In the 34th minute a Matt Webb cross was saved by Kerley but as the ball ran loose the keeper brought down Bradley Harris for a penalty to Patchway, James Stephens hit a hard low shot straight down the middle as Kerley dived to his right. Stephens almost got a second when he struck a pass from Grinter at goal and with the keeper off his line the ball dropped onto the roof of the net. Sodbury had several more breaks down the right before the break but the crosses into the box were just not good enough for their forwards to get on the end of them.
|
In the second half Sodbury continued to spurn the chances they created with poor shots that went wide of the target. In the 80th minute Patchway were awarded another penalty for a foul in the box and James Stephens stepped up to take it. His first effort was saved by the keeper but he had moved well off his line and the kick was retaken. This time Stephens opted for the blast and his shot struck the crossbar so hard that it bounced down and back into play. Two minutes later Patchway went 2-0 up when Bradley Harris got round the back of the home defence sent the cross into the six yard box where defender Darren Gould was unable to prevent the ball cannoning off his leg into the net. Three minute later a third penalty was awarded this time to the home side as Bradley Harris handled in the box and received his marching orders from the referee. Sodbury’s Lloyd Harding cheekily chipped the ball into the net as Kaminski dived to his left.

31st OCTOBER 2009 Attendance - 60 ROCKLEAZE AVONSIDE 3 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 6 A big shock of the day was the 6-3 win that Chipping Sodbury Town inflicted on previously undefeated Rockleaze Avonside. Danny Coombes opened the scoring for the visitors on the 10 minute mark finding himself clear to fire past the keeper. Lee Gardiner then made it 2-0 on 17 minutes when he netted the first of his three goals of the afternoon. The home side hit back with a scrappy goal from Troy Simpson before Lee Gardiner netted his second for Town in the 44th minute. Two minutes into the second half Sodbury were 4-1 up with strike from Luke Meacham. The home side hit back with a header from Troy Simpson, before Alex Fox score a fifth for the visitors as he passed the ball into the Rockleaze net. Lee Gardiner then netted his third of the afternoon with an easy tap in to complete his hat-trick, then with just 3 minutes left Central defender Aaron Day rose above the Sodbury defence to head home a third for Rockleaze Avonside. Some outstanding saves by John Kerley the Sodbury keeper kept the home forwards at bay.

After 12 minutes Alex Fox was brought down by the Ellwood keeper and Lloyd Harding made no mistake from 12 yards. Two minutes later Lee Gardiner’s speculative shot from 30 yards bounced off the keepers knee and into the net. Ellwood fought back in the second half and in the 65th minute Sodbury keeper Jon Kerley gave away a disputed penalty and Darren Weyman scored from the spot. Five minutes later Ellwood drew level when substitute Julian Addis netted a goalmouth scramble.

In the 2nd Round of the Les James Cup Competition Taverners progress to the Semi-finals after winning 3-2 on penalties. The final score had finished 3-3 after 90 minutes. There is no extra time in this competition. Both teams had to contend with a very strong wind blowing straight down the pitch at Nailsworth and it was the home side that were up against it in the first 45 minutes. Chipping Sodbury kept the pressure on the Taverners defence right from the kick-off and only some brave defending kept them at bay. The deadlock was broken in the 30th minute when Sodbury’s Alex Fox sprung the offside trap to round keeper Duanne Portlock for a 1-0 lead. Sodbury continued to press and goal-line clearances from Craig Roberts and Mike Thornton kept the score-line down to one at the break. Taverners made sure that they would take full advantage of the wind in the second half and thought they had levelled the score on 55 minutes as Tom Burridge headed home from a corner only to have the goal ruled out for a foul on the visitor’s keeper. Five minutes later he was at it again heading in from a corner and this time the goal stood Taverners were level.
|
The home side then went ahead after a low drive at goal was handled in the box and Mike Thornton netted the resulting penalty. In the 67th minute Taverners found themselves 3-1 up as a ball into the box was flicked on by Ian Preece and all the defender could do was try to prevent the ball entering the net. In the 80th minute Sodbury made a double substitution Chris Power and Shaun Halford coming on and within 3 minutes Power had pulled a goal back to make it 3-2. This lifted the visitors, who then levelled the score in the 86th minute as Shaun Halfords cross was neatly headed home at the near post by Paul Harris. This lead the game into penalties to decided who would go through.
Mike Thornton netted the first for the home side, but Lloyd Harding’s attempt for Sodbury was well saved by the home keeper. Tom Burridge then proceeded to miss the second Taverners penalty and Danny Coombes levelled with Sodbury’s second. Craig Mills made it 2-1 to Taverners and Ollie Clark levelled for Sodbury. The home side then went 3-2 up as Matt Spring netted, then disaster for Sodbury as Mike England missed. The 5th penalty for Taverners was taken by Paul Jennings and he missed so that meant Paul Harris had to score to level for Sodbury, but he missed and that sent the home side through. |

21st NOVEMBER 2009 Attendance - 30 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 THORNBURY TOWN 1 Chipping Sodbury Town and Thornbury Town finished all square on 1-1 No goals in the first 45 minutes but Sodbury took the lead 2 minutes into the second half. They had forced several corners and the ball was moving back and forwards across goal before it fell nicely for Paul Harris to drive home. Thornbury’s goal was a superb 25 yard drive by Dan Thompson to level the score in what was described as a very good game considering the appalling conditions.

30th JANUARY 2010 Attendance - 21 HIGHRIDGE UNITED 3 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 Highridge United gained a 3-1 home victory over Chipping Sodbury Town. The home side dominated the first half and had several clear cut chances to have taken the lead and Gary Cripps was guilty of missing the easiest chance after Craig Liddell had set him up. Highridge took the lead from a Craig Hopkins corner in the 65th minute when Cripps made up for his earlier miss driving the ball home from ten yards. Sodbury hit back in the 73rd minute when Mike England’s corner was headed home by Alex Fox. Andy Sledge who had come on as a substitute for the home side then set up Micky Adams to give them a 2-1 lead. With 3 minutes left on the clock, Andy Sledge then made it 3-1 when he rounded several defenders before slotting the ball home.

13th FEBRUARY 2010 Attendance - 48 BERKELEY TOWN 3 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 4 Chipping Sodbury Town hit back to win 4-3 after going 3-0 down after 51 minutes in a very exciting game at Berkeley Town. The home side opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Peter Langford was put clear to drive the ball home. Gary Gaynor made amends for his own goal last week as put the home side 2-0 up with a header right on half time. Mike Bryant made it 3-1 6 minutes into the second half and it looked as though the points were safe, but Sodbury had other ideas as Paul Harris netted the first of three goals in the 54th minute when he bundled the ball home from a free kick. Six minutes later Sodbury pulled the score back to 3-2 as Harris netted his second with another close range effort. Berkeley Peter Lavis then levelled it up when he put the ball into his own net and then in the very last minute Paul Harris got clear of the Berkeley defence to complete his hattrick and give Sodbury three very valuable points.

What a cracking match between title contenders Kings Stanley and very much improved Chipping Sodbury Town at the Ridings. The lead changed hands three times before both sides had to settle for a 3-3 draw. This game was one of the best I have watched all season and a credit to both sides who both set their stall out to win the game.
Sodbury almost opened the scoring in the very first minute as Luke Meacham’s shot was brilliantly smothered by Stanley’s keeper Gavin Dean. Both sides looked dangerous around the box, but the opening goal came from a set piece. Stanley had a corner on the left and the ball came over high and to the far post where central defender Steve Walker rose above everybody to power his header into the net. Sodbury hit back and Jamie Coombes went close with a header , then a few minutes later Dean had to be at his best to save from a free kick on the edge of the Staley box. In the 20thminute Sodbury drew level as Luke Meacham broke down the left and sent in a great cross that fizzed past the Stanley defence and there was Paul Harris to knock the ball in from close range. Stanley always looked sharp on the break but it was the home side that went ahead in the 24thminute when a corner from the right was only half cleared and the ball was hammered into the box where Paul Harris had the simple job of side footing the ball home. A couple of minutes later Paul Harris got behind the Stanley defence but then shot straight at Dean. Matt Casey had a clear shot on goal but Chris Simsek fisted the ball away. Stanley were back in the game after 29 minutes when Eion Szuejkowski fired home from just inside the box. Just after the break a through ball played through for Matt Casey was really well read by Simsek who denied the striker a goalscoring chance as he came off his line to clear. Both teams kept the goal keeper busy with efforts from Stanley’s Ben Newman and then Jamie Coombes was on target with his shot from the edge of the box. Kings Stanley took the lead for a second time with a superb pass from Mike Beckinghan for Ben Newman to score. Mike Beckingham could well have increased Stanley’s lead if it had not been for a brilliant save from Simsek. The home side scored a deserved equalising goal in the 83rd minute through Danny Coombes after a mistake in the Stanley defence. |

Five minutes later Gardiner was on target again to make it 2-0 although the home side were still creating the odd chance they failed to find the back of the net and in the 88th minute Paul Harris popped up to score number 3 for the visitors.

On a blustery afternoon the first half offered little in terms of clear cut chances. An end product was found missing for both sides and with tackles flying in, the teams went into the break level. Sodbury took the lead on 10 minutes when a cross from Darren Andrews was headed home by Alex Fox. Both sides continued to play the ball about but the score remained 1-0 at the break. In the 60th minute Sodbury were handed a slice of luck or misjudgement if you like as the visitors keeper came to gather a long ball but realised that he could not get there and back pedalled but was beaten by a cross come shot from Danny Coombes that flew over his head into the net.

24th APRIL 2010 Attendance - 25 TAVERNERS 1 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 0 Taverners enjoyed a slender 1 – 0 victory over Chipping Sodbury Town at Nailsworth but they are still only one place off the bottom and only two points behind Berkeley Town with a game in hand. Taverners enjoyed the early exchanges and might have take the lead after ten minutes when a free-kick into the box found Mike Thornton who’s shot was cleared off the line. A few minutes later Craig Mills saw his 25 yard shot deflected and Mike Thornton headed over from the resulting corner. Chipping Sodbury’s first attempt on goal saw Lee Gardiner attempt to round the keeper but Portlock fended him off with his legs and then turned to secure the loose ball. In the 25th minute Jay Redbond missed a glorious chance to give the home side the lead. Then a break down the right by centre-back Ian Preece who’s cross into the box found Redbond who laid it back for Mills who then fired over the bar from close range. The only goal of the game came in the 62nd minute when a long kick from keeper Portlock was headed back by Redbond to Harsant who chipped the ball over the defence and Redbonds miscued shot trickled through the goal-keepers hands into the net. In the 70th minute Sodbury could have drawn level when a shot from outside the box caught Portlock off his line and the keeper only just managing to flick the ball over the bar at the last moment. The chance of the afternoon came when Tom Hanley missed a sitter from 8 yards with just a few minutes remaining.

The home side had the first real chance after just 8 minutes but Luke Walker shot straight at Chris Simsek from 12 yards out. Henbury’s fist effort on goal came after 15 minutes a superb shot from Aaron Rosser that was just wide of the upright.Henbury should have levelled on 25 minutes when Chris Simsek could only parry Billy Georges shot straight into the path of Luke Walker who contrived to hit the upright from a yard out with all the goalmouth empty and the keeper on the ground.
