The visitors took the lead in the 15th minute when Luke Meacham found the back of the Berkeley net, but Mike Bryant headed the home side level just before the break. Paul Brooks headed Berkeley into the lead just after the break, then Chipping Sodbury threw away a golden chance to level when Paul Gunnings penalty on 64 minutes struck the upright.

A very good crowd of around a 160 spectators witnessed the first ever home game for Chipping Sodbury Town in the Surridge Gloucestershire County Football league.
Slimbridge always looked the better organised side throughout this game with Chipping Sodbury Town working hard but failed to break down a well organised defence. The star man with out any doubt was former Gloucester City player Carl Brown who constantly troubled the Sodbury defence and finished up scoring a hat-trick to win the game. Sodbury had several half chances and a couple of good scoring opportunities but the visitor’s goalkeeper Lee Martin was in good form. Slimbridge showed their intentions as early as the 4th minute when Carl Brown shot just wide. Towns first real chance came from Daniel Coombes in the 22nd minute but he shot wide of the target. Slimbridge thought they had taken the lead on 24 minutes when Brown got on the end of a cross from the right, but the goal was disallowed because he had strayed offside. Slimbridge took the lead in the 35th minute when a goalmouth scramble and a fine save from keeper Chris Simsek fell nicely for Carl Brown to stab the ball home. Two minutes later a brilliant run down the right by Brown culminating in a shot from just inside the box for his second. Town almost got a goal back in the 40th minute when Liam Barrett rose well above the Slimbridge defence to power a header goalwards only to see Martin diving to his left to save. Sodbury were having their best spell of the game and Barrett once again brought the best out of Martin as the keeper finger tipped his 35 yard drive over the bar. |
An early chance in the 2nd half for Daniel Coombes could have brought the score back to 2-1 but he failed to control the ball and the danger was cleared. Slimbridge always looked dangerous in attack and it was no surprise when they increased their lead to 3-0 in the 51st minute Carl Brown shrugged of the town defender to slot home his third of the night from just on the edge of the box. Coombes might have reduced the deficit but drove his shot straight at the keeper and at the other end a Fran King free kick for the visitors was well saved by Simsek. Sodbury substitute Andrews set up Barrett with a chance but he pulled his shot well wide. Then just at the end Brown could have got a fourth but he shot wide of the target.

23rd AUGUST 2008 Attendance - 92 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 TUFFLEY ROVERS 4 Tuffley Rovers are the leaders following the second week of matches. They visited newcomers Chipping Sodbury Town and came away with a resounding 4-1 victory. Town were the first to open the scoring with an Ollie Clarke goal on 15 minutes, but after Shayne Bradley headed an equaliser in the 28th minute the visitors didn’t look back. Bradley netted his second 2 minutes later from a free-kick and just before the break Pete Thomas drove home a superb volley from just inside the box to give Rovers a 3-1 lead. Tuffley knew they had all three points when Stuart Griffiths made it 4-1 on the hour mark. Not the start to the season Sodbury would have wanted but there are plenty of games left for them to settle down.

20th SEPTEMBER 2008 Attendance - 33 DRG STAPLETON 0 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 Chipping Sodbury Town gained their first three points with a 1-0 win at close rivals D.R.G. Stapleton. This was a poor game to watch with both teams failing to produce any sort of pattern into their play. Sodbury were reduced to ten men in the 57th minute when Mike England was sent off for a bad tackle from behind, but the home side that have yet to score in 360 minutes of football in the league this season was unable to capitalise on the one man advantage. They went close on a couple of occasions when Justin Bishop set up Conrad Mignott to round the Sodbury keeper then hit his shot against the upright as he faced an open goal. Chipping Sodbury should have scored when Lee Gardner was put clear on goal but a last ditch tackle by Kirk Waldron averted the danger. Mignott was again unlucky in the second half when Sodbury’s keeper just managed to divert his effort on goal onto the crossbar. Sodbury were never fazed at being one man down and towards the end looked the side that just might score a winner and it came in the 85thminute when Lee Gardner was put clear on goal and his angled shot flew past Humphries into the far corner.

Chipping Sodbury’s chance of climbing the table was dented by a Slimbridge side that were well organised and overall the much better side throughout the 90 minutes. In only the second minute of the game Slimbridge were looking for a penalty as Craig Cole went tumbling in the box but the referee was having none of it and waved play on. Then a Leon Sterling cross was missed by keeper Jon Kerley but the ball went just wide of the post. Craig Cole turned on the edge of the box and saw his shot go just wide. After riding the early pressure Chipping Sodbury almost took the lead when Lee Peacock broke clear and only a brilliant save from Ryan Chandler prevented them going ahead. James Inch might have given the visitors the lead on 20 minutes from a corner but his header went just over the bar. Sodbury’s Ben Leslie broke down the right and sent a great cross into the box, but it went just beyond the reach of Peacock and out for a goal kick. Craig Cole then tested the Sodbury keeper with a stinging shot that he did well to save. Just when it looked as though the fist 45 minutes would end in a 0-0 score-line Slimbridge took the lead. Cole, Roberts and Wilton combined to set up a low cross into the Sodbury box and Brad Hackett in his attempt to clear drove the ball into his own net.
|
Sodbury opened well in the second half and only a last ditch tackle by Leon Sterling prevented Lawrence Dorman a clear shot on goal. The action switched to the other end and Wilton missed the easiest of chances firing the ball over the bar. The next few minutes saw Sodbury on the back foot and only some very good defending and several good saves from keeper Kerley prevented Slimbridge getting a second goal. In a rare venture into the Slimbridge box Sodbury forced a corner on the right and with the ball dropping nicely for substitute Paul Harris to strike the ball at goal, somehow the Slimbridge defence kept the ball out of their net with a deflection that went out for a further corner. Slimbridge got lucky on 75 minutes when a corner from the left was going backwards and forwards in the Sodbury box and it popped up nicely for centre back Ian Preece to head home. Two minutes later a cross from the left from substitute Martin Booth was misjudged by Kerley and the ball fell straight to Marvyn Roberts to drive home. The final score of 3-0 to the visitors was just about right on the amount of chances they had created throughout the game.

6th DECEMBER 2008 Attendance - 75 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 THORNBURY TOWN 2 Thornbury Town travelled the short distance to local rivals Chipping Sodbury Town on Saturday looking to get back to winning ways and had to battle hard to come away with three valuable points.
With Peter Fowler returning to his more usual position alongside Ricki Lippiatt in the heart of the Thornbury defence it gave manager Dave Lippiatt the opportunity to give Nick Taylor his debut in the middle of a three man midfield. Although Thornbury had the better of the opening encounters Chipping Sodbury took the lead after 20 minutes when following a misunderstanding in the Thornbury defence Dave Coombe was allowed time and space to pick his spot with a headed goal from a corner kick. Thornbury responded well and were on level terms within ten minutes when Sam Lippiatt calmly volleyed home an accurate pass from brother Ricki, again following a corner kick. The half time whistle came with the scores still level at half time at 1-1 and with both teams knowing that a win was very important to create a gap between the bottom two clubs. |
Mike Chilcott - 18 League Appearances.
Dave Coombe - 52 League Appearances. Laurence Dorman - 3 League Appearances. Mike England - 85 League Appearances. Shaun Halford - 3 League Appearances. Craig Harding - 4 League Appearances. Paul Harris - 36 League Appearances. Jon Kerley - 12 League Appearances. Alex Lambert - 9 League Appearances. Andrew Miles - 16 League Appearances. Joe Mullins - 66 League Appearances. Lloyd Harding - 10 League Appearances. Lee Peacock - 5 League Appearances. Thornbury took the initiative and had the better chances in the second period but these continued to be squandered. On the hour mark a double substitution by Thornbury saw the first team debut for Shane Walker following good recent games with the reserves and Mike Groves to add fresh impetus in the centre of midfield. Their freshness nearly paid dividends for Thornbury when Shane Walker found himself clear on goal on a couple of occasions but a mixture of pitch conditions and good goalkeeping saw the opportunities pass. With the match looking a draw, which was no good to either team, Thornbury finally got their noses in front when a shot from Steve Alexander was palmed out by the Sodbury keeper and it was central defender Peter Fowler who responded first to poke the ball home. Why and how he was so far up the pitch only he will know the answer but the resultant 2-1 win gained three valuable points for Thornbury Town. |

27th DECEMBER 2008 Attendance - 53 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 0 BERKELEY TOWN 2 Chipping Sodbury Town are still struggling to find their form, after going down 2 – 0 at home to Berkeley Town in an uninspiring goalless first half. Berkeley opened the scoring straight after the break with a Peter Lavis penalty and five minutes later Berkeley completed the double over Sodbury when Adam Philp netted Berkeley’s second. Late on Sodbury had a goal disallowed for off-side.

31st JANUARY 2009 Attendance - 29 B & W AVONSIDE 1 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 2 Chipping Sodbury Town gained their fourth victory of the season away to B & W Avonside, after going a goal behind and having a player dismissed. Kris Reubens opened the scoring after 10 minutes for the home side which found him unmarked and his right footed shot flew into the top corner of the net. Both sides had further chances in the first half but failed to capitalize. In the 60th minute Sodbury were down to ten men when Lee Pendrey was dismissed. This inspired Sodbury into action and levelled the score through Paul Harris in the 70th minute. 12 minutes later they gained all three points when Ian Burnell’s challenge gave away a free-kick which Laurence Dorman converted.

7th MARCH 2009 Attendance - 105 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 YATE TOWN RESERVES 4 The game between local rivals Chipping Sodbury Town and Yate Town Reserves ended in a 4 – 1 win for Yate to complete the double. Yate opened the scoring after 10 minutes when Justin Pritchard split the Sodbury defence with a superb pass to Gary Owers who neatly flicked the ball around Sodbury’s keeper Jon Kerley to slip the ball into an empty net. Pritchard then found himself clear on goal but he over hit his shot and the ball flew over the top. Sodbury’s first effort came from Andrew Miles, whose shot just cleared the bar. Sodbury drew level on 20 minutes when a break down the right by Daniel Cook saw his cross neatly headed home by Paul Harris. Sodbury had a great chance to take the lead from a free-kick but Daniel Cook’s effort on goal went straight to Growcott in the Yate Goal. Yate’s Gary Powell then saw his 30 yard free-kick neatly flicked over the bar by Kerley.

Ex Sodbury player Danny Coombes netted number three for the visitors on 70 minutes and then five minutes later Yate went further ahead when Gary Powell’s in swinging corner was headed home by Luke Coles. Yate should have made it five when Jack Smythe broke free down the left and crossed into the box where Charlie Lacey’s shot was well saved by Kerley. |

11th MARCH 2009 Attendance - 49 HIGHRIDGE UNITED 3 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 1 This game between Highridge United and Chipping Sodbury Town never really got off the ground. There was no pattern of play from either side, both teams just lumped balls backwards and forwards and neither keeper having anything to do except for a goal kick now and again. Then out of the blue, Chipping Sodbury forced a corner on the left in the 40th minute and Daniel Cook’s glancing header flew past Brimble in the Highridge goal. At half time you did not dare venture near the home dressing room as the home side management team ripped into the players with expletives I am unable to repeat in this report. It was almost as good as the Peter Read dressing down that was shown on TV a few years back, only there were no beeps.

The second half saw a slight improvement in the home sides display but they failed to break down a very resilient Sodbury defence, until the 80th minute when a fantastic 30 yard left foot drive from Nick Pratton gave the Sodbury keeper no chance as it literally flew into the back of the net. This certainly lifted the home side and within a minute they were in the lead as Chris Johnson hit a left footed drive across the visitor’s keeper and into the far corner of the net. Sodbury must have felt dejected at this point as they had led for such a long time. Highridge were certainly flattered by the score line as Mickey Adams turned in the third goal right on 90 minutes. |

14th MARCH 2009 Attendance - 76 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 0 KINGS STANLEY 3 Kings Stanley keep up their challenge for the title with a 3 – 0 win at Chipping Sodbury Town. Stanley went ahead in the 30th minute from the penalty spot after Sodbury’s Lloyd Harding prevented a goal-scoring chance and received his marching orders Tony Francis netting from the spot. Ten man Sodbury held out until the 55th minute when Matt Casey made it 2 – 0 to the visitors. Ten minutes later Mike Beckingham netted the third for Stanley to keep up the pressure on Slimbridge.

21st MARCH 2009 Attendance - 33 SLIMBRIDGE 2 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 0 Slimbridge scraped home with a 2-0 defeat over bottom club Chipping Sodbury Town but were well below their usual form on the day. Town had the first real chance after 2 minutes when Harris lobbed keeper Ryan Chandler only to see the ball drop onto the top of the net. The home side took the lead in the 21st minute when James Cole’s free kick on the right eluded the Sodbury defence and their keeper to nestle in the back of the net. Sodbury should have levelled in the 65th minute when Lee Pendrey, clear on goal pulled his shot wide of the target. Slimbridge who had plenty of possession hung on to their slender lead until the 90th minute when Gary Ash’s shot was blocked by the Sodbury keeper only to rebound straight to Craig Cole to tap home.

Chipping Sodbury Town's relegation from the Gloucestershire County Football League has been reprieved.
They finished bottom of the table following their promotion from the Bristol Premier Combination but will not go down as the Management Committee recommended that the league should be increased from 17 to 18 clubs.
The Constitution for 2009-10 also confirms Slimbridge’s promotion to the Hellenic League and Brimscombe & Thrupp and Kingswood’s promotions from the Northern Senior League.
This is the first time for many years that there is a balance of nine clubs from both North and South of the county. Thornbury Town would be classed as one of the clubs from the North although it sits roughly in the centre.
